2015 February Newsletter

FAIRBANKS WATERCOLOR SOCIETY - NEWSLETTER – FEBRUARY, 2015

Monthly Meeting: Wednesday, Feb. 18th.  We will be in the Blue Room on the Third Floor in the Centennial for the Arts Building (Pickle Barrel), in Pioneer Park.  Always on the third Wednesday of the month.  Social time and snacks at 6:30pmand the meeting will start at 7:00pm.

Refreshments: For February we have Nelda & Tom Nixon, Pam Wagaman, Tammy Phillips and Dan Kennedy signed up for refreshments.  Anyone else wishing to bring some delectable delights, it is much appreciated!  If for some reason you are not able to attend the meeting and are signed up, please contact Marj Moberly at 457-4661.

SUE'S CORNER:
Well, I think we got off to a good start last month.  Vladimir was great, as always, and we even got an article in the paper about our club so more people know about us now. Becky with her great enthusiasm, has already planned out the year's programs for us.
Tom Nixon will be doing a demo on Northern lights this month, so bring your paints and a friend.  Also, be thinking ahead about what you're going to put into the show in March so we can have a good showing.   There is no theme, so you can paint and enter anything you desire.  All paintings must have a wire across the back and be ready to hang.  Nelda will have more details on that and where and when to turn things in.
See you Wednesday, the 18th
Sue Cole, President

PAINTING AURORAS WITH TOM NIXON
Greetings and salutations, oh mighty artists!  We have a great program lined up for our February meeting that you will not want to miss!  We will be painting with the wonderfully talented TOM NIXON, as he guides us through creating beautiful auroras.  I can't wait!  So bring your paints, bring your friends, and bring yourself!  It's going to be a fun night in the Blue Room!  Thank you, Tom!
A NOTE FROM TOM ABOUT THIS CLASS:  Stuff you should have for the class.  Fresh pigment or paint in your palette that is not dried like a rock.  Colors I will use will be Veridian or Emerald Green, Rose, Cool Yellow, Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Indigo.   A natural hair brush of some sort.  Nylon brushes will leave marks on the paper with this particular exercise.  Good quality paper, Arches or Canson.  A backer board to attach your paper to that is somewhat waterproof.  Your normal painting equipment.   A willingness to try something that is challenging and new to some of you and a bucket of smiles – with some water.

NELDA’S NOTE

Well, the next major event coming up (after next week’s meeting, of course) for our group is our Annual Show opening First Friday, March 6th, 2015 at White Palms Art Gallery.  First Friday times will be from 3pm to 8pm.  So early birds will have a chance to have a look and vote too!   We expect a large turnout.
We’ll be allowed to hang two medium sized paintings, no more than 19”x 25” each outside frame measurements, or one half sheet framed, approximately 22”x30”, outside frame.  We do seem to have plenty of room, but we are limiting the number of paintings. 2 medium (or smaller) or 1 large.  Our show will hang from March 6th through March 14th.  And paintings that haven’t sold will need to be picked up on that Saturday, the 14th.  The gallery will be open Fri and Sat noon-5pm and Wednesday the 11th, then Fri. and Sat. the 13 & 14th from noon to five.  It is good we’ll have more ‘open’ time, but People’s Choice votes will only occur First Friday March 6th.  So tell your friends and family!
I’ll have entry forms and guidelines at the meeting and I am attaching copies with this, as well.
Also if you are entering something in the show please bring some finger food for the opening night. A sign-up sheet will be at the meeting.

One thing…to be in the show, dues need to be current.  You will be able to pay them when you turn in your paintings on the Sat. (Feb. 28th) before First Friday.  The yearly dues are $15.  You may pay for more than one year, please note what year(s) you are paying for.  Dues are always due on January 1st for every new year.  Pay by check or cash at the meetings (on green sheets) or mail a check to PO Box 82536, 99708 using the membership renewal form I’ve attached to this newsletter.  Please fill it out.  It really helps to have current information on the form….for our roster.
Thank you.  NN

FAIRBANKS WATERCOLOR SOCIETY -  NEWSLETTER – FEBRUARY – 2013

MONTHLY MEETING, WEDNESDAY,  FEBRUARY 20TH.     In the Blue Room, 3rd floor of the Civic Center Building at Pioneer Park.     6:30 Social time, 7:00 Meeting starts.

REFRESHMENTS:

This month our Refreshment list has Steve Holford, Dan Kennedy, Ritchie Musick and Nikki Kinne.  We all thank you so much.  We love the goodies!!   Contact Marj Moberly at 457-4661 if you have any questions or are unable to be there.

PRESIDENT'S PAGE

Hello all.
Don't forget to bring your painting supplies to this months meeting, as we will be painting. Steve will have details.
Congratulations to all who had art accepted into The Patterns of Influence Juried Exhibit. It will hang thru Feb so be sure to check it out if you haven't already.
A reminder, Art Expo is coming up March 9th at Alaskaland. FWS will have a booth there, promoting watercolor. I think we may need a few volunteers to help booth-sit, so let Nelda know if you can make it.

See you on the 20th.
Matt Moberly, President

STEVE’S SCOOP:

Hellooooooo fellow FWS members; thank you for being crazy enough to nominate and trust me with being your Vice President! It’s kind of like giving your blind uncle the keys to the car.   I’m excited to announce we have a great year ahead of us with great outings, talented keynote speakers, and more painting during meetings. We will be pushing the boundaries on our watercolor skills, discovering the myriad of talents amongst our members, and strengthening our business acumen. Members, such as Tom Nixon & Sue Cole, have agreed to share their well-earned knowledge during meeting workshops.  Art gurus such as Jill Marshall have agreed to share the business side of things. February’s meeting is going to be full of romance (don’t worry, I won’t be kissing anyone) as we explore “the Romance of Art” through watercolor painting. Bring your supplies, paints, & paper to this meeting so we can spread some love with our brushes. If you are new to the FWS, don’t have supplies, or intimidated by painting amongst your peers; have no worries …I’m bringing extra supplies and we have an amazing group of helpful members brimming with raw talent!

Sincerely,
Steve “CROSS” Holford   907.888.0825

NELDA’S NOTES:

Thanks to all of you who have paid your dues.  It is gratifying to see all the checks come rolling in.  There are still a few to come yet.  Remember if you want to put a painting in our Annual show, your dues need to be up to date.  We will have forms at the meeting and I can always email you one if you can’t get it from the website. Email me or call 456-3329 if you need anything additional.

Last month I included the guidelines for our annual March show, which is much the same as last year, as well as the entry forms and info sheet for the paintings you will enter.  As we’ve mentioned a few times, the theme this year is “Vintage Alaska”  which can mean just about anything old….  Scenes, landscapes, buildings, cars, trucks, equipment, trees, old bottles, clothing, hair-do’s and of course, people.  I think we can have a lot of fun with this theme, and it will be interesting to see what we all come up with.  That’s why I love helping with intake.  This year it will be on Feb. 23rd, noon to 5pm at Well Street.  It will be exciting… remember: watermedia, since we are a watercolor society, which means watercolor or acrylic.

Check out our web site. www.fairbankswatercolor.org  I just checked and Twila has it up to date with forms for the show and I know she will put the Garcia registration form on there too.  The newsletters through January and the last Tickler  are posted in a blog.  Really easy to read.  I think the print is a little bigger than here and it’s easy to find.  We will get forms on there for the show.  Look under News for show forms.

AND,  This month I am including the registration sheet for the Joe Garcia Workshop. May 13-17, at St. Raphael’s.  Most all the information is there.  Please get your registration in as soon as you can to make sure you get a spot.  Again space is limited.  You can pay the one half deposit or the full amount now.  The full cost is going to be $375.  He is very excited to be coming to Alaska and has us listed on his website. www.joegarcia.cog.

I kind of squished the Guidelines, so it would take up less space here, and attached again the Artist Painting Forms for you and your paintings.  Pretty self-explanatory.   We’ll have some copies at the meeting as well.

PRESIDENT'S PAGE

Happy belated New Year's all, hope it's off to a good start for you.
I'm looking forward to serving as your President for the next 2 years, working with Steve Holford, your new VP, and bringing fun exciting things and hopefully more painting to each meeting. Plan on bringing your paints, sketching materials, whatever, to the meetings.
Hopefully we will have time to do something at each meeting.

Don't forget Patterns of Influence juried show is coming up. Intake will be
Jan 25-27th, 12pm-6pm Fri and Sat, 12-5pm on Sunday. In the past FAA usually needs a few volunteers for intake, so if you can help them out, call 456-6485.

Also, in March is Art Expo 2013, Saturday March 9th from 11am-6pm.

FWS normally has a booth there, promoting the Watercolor Society and answering
questions the public may have. We will be needing members to sit at our booth if you can volunteer a few hours.

Nikki Kinne will be our program presenter on Wed.  I understand that she will be presenting a talk on Photoshop, not sure of exactly what. I suppose if you have a laptop with Photoshop you can bring it and follow along.

See ya Wed the 16th !!
Thanks,

NELDA’S NOTES:

Well, the New Year is here.  Ta Da!!  Time now to do all the things you put off during the holidays (or rather I did!).

Firstly, is to remind everyone that Dues for 2013 are Due.  I’m anxious to check the post office, as I know most of you must have printed out the membership form in the Dec. newsletter, and mailed in your check, or paid at the meeting.  And….if any of you have any questions about what it will take to bring you up to date through 2013, just give me a call at 456-3329.   Thank you! in advance.  It is very important for your dues to be current, so we can pay all our little bills and cover expenses for the upcoming show and workshop.  Which brings me to….

Secondly,  I’m including the guidelines for our annual March show, which is much the same as last year, and the entry forms and info sheet for the paintings you will enter.  As we’ve mentioned a few times, the theme this year is“Vintage Alaska”.  Which can mean just about anything old….

Thirdly, I wanted to remind you about our web site. www.fairbankswatercolor.org  I was checking it out last night, and the newsletters through November and the Ticklers are posted in a blog.  Really easy to read.  I think the print is a little bigger than here and it’s easy to find.  We will get forms on there for the show.

AND,  As soon as we have a signed contract for the Joe Garcia Workshop. May 13-17, we will have the forms on the site as well.  I expect that in early February.  (By next newsletter)

I kind of squished the Guidelines, so it would take up less space here.  I have also attached the Guidelines to this newsletter, (if you want a bigger copy) and the Artist Painting Forms for you and your paintings.  Pretty self-explanatory.
