PRESIDENT'S PALETTE
Happy New Year to all. We are starting the new year with cold temperatures, but we are already adding 4 minutes a day and know that at the end of January the light will give us those wonderful purples, blues and reds on the snow which people Outside can’t imagine. Taking out your watercolors may not be the best way to captures these miracles of light, but going out with a camera, or even sketching in pencil from your car, with color notes, and then going back home to start painting will surely make the experience unforgettable. And capturing this light of Interior Alaska will give you a painting to hang at Well Street in our March show ‘Interior Light’.

If you can’t get out of town, then set up a still life, which is a miniature landscape as it has the same three dimensions: close-up, mid-ground, and distance. If you take a class from Vladimir he will tell you to soften edges in the distance and let hard edges in the foreground contrast with those soft edges to focus the viewer’s eye on the focal area.

The Guidelines for the 13th Annual Water Media Show are attached to the newsletter, and the intake at Well Street will be on Saturday, February 25th. Pick-up will be on March 31st, so mark your calendar. We hope to get even more than the 99 paintings we had last year, when the show was extremely successful with a lot of sales.
Happy painting!
Helen Howard, President

FROM BECKY’S CORNER
Greetings and Salutations, oh Mighty Artists!  Thanks for all the fun at last month's meeting!  A big thank you goes to Tom Nixon who graciously headed up the festivities, as we opened and traded (voluntarily or involuntarily) our gifts.  There was great food, great company, and great laughter all around.  The Christmas party is always a fun time!  And speaking of fun, don't miss the January meeting, where we will be taking advantage of the season of lights---northern, that is. Sue Cole with be demonstrating her wonderful northern lights painting technique, so bring your painting materials, and let's have fun trying our hand at the techniques she shares.  I've always wanted to see how she does it, so now is my chance---and yours, too.  Thanks, Sue!
From my Corner of the Studio to Yours, That's the scoop!
Becky

SUE sends us this note:  For materials for the Northern Lights Demo, bring your regular painting supplies.
I normally have people do two at once, so they can get the idea, so 5 x 7" paper would be a good size for practice.
I use a 1" flat brush or a 1" oval or round brush usually, and also use a black foam brush for just wetting the paper.  If you have one, bring a hake brush or a 2" CHIP brush (cheap household brush, CHIP is the brand)  Sentry hardware has them or Joanne’s.

Suggested colors are French Ultramarine Blue, Thalo Blue, Prussian Blue, Indigo or Cheap Joes's “June Bug” – bring only one blue (The color blue determines whether it will be a morning sky or night sky)
Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose
Thalo Green or Hooker's Green
Burnt Umber
A board or clipboard to put the paper on because you will be picking it up and tipping it while doing the painting.
Sue Cole

ANNUAL SHOW:
Well folks, our Annual March show is just around the corner on March 2nd, First Friday.  Hope you have a few paintings planned and/or painted.  The theme for 2012 is “INTERIOR LIGHT”.   As Helen mentioned, this is a very broad spectrum.  Watercolor and watermedia will be accepted.  You can focus on indoor-light through a window or a light bulb!, outdoor – light in the woods, still life with a glow and even portraits!  But, the light should be predominant.  It will be exciting to see what people come up with.  We will again have the people’s choice.  Dues must be current. We will be at Well Street Art Company, the commission is 50/50 as last year.  Up to three paintings will be accepted.  The turn-in date will be Sat. Feb. 25th.  That will be confirmed in the January Newsletter.  Please note, you can always make special arrangements if that date does not work for you. Call Nelda 456-3329 to coordinate, please.  For now, just paint, paint, paint.  We have the Official Guidelines for the show and also the Artist Paintings forms attached.

FROM DAVID MOLLETT
Hello Everyone,
Ever thought about taking a printmaking course? Your opportunity is here! I will be teaching two separate courses this Spring semester: Intaglio (etching emphasis but also mezzo tint, drypoint and photo processes)  and  a more general Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Printmaking which includes woodcut, reduction prints, etching and photo processes. They are scheduled to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30-1 Intaglio and 2-4:30 Printmaking. Both are available for graduate level if you prefer.
Printmaking is a medium suitable for all artists who work in any medium. It is a way to easily make multiples that you can sell for modest prices that add up to real money. Many sculptors and painters make their primary living off their prints.  Just look at Christo for instance.
The UAF shop is well equipped and environmentally safe. Have some fun and learn some new skills. Try printmaking.
Happy New Year,
David Mollett

SPECIAL NOTE:
I had the privilege of helping Ellen Brown get settled in her new apartment in her same building.  She had a Housekeeping woman clean (called a ‘move-out’, including cleaning the carpet) the old apartment and she did a marvelous job, in just a few hours.  Ellen asked if I would tell people about her-give her an advertising plug.  So here is her information, should you need her help.  Her name is Beverly Bernard, phone 460-1945.
She will do scheduled cleanings or move-outs.  She charges $35/hour.  As Ellen says, “She’s great!”
