PRESIDENT'S PALETTE
What an amazing show at Well Street Gallery!  Congratulations to all the artists who entered up to three paintings apiece, and thank you to Nelda Nixon and Cheryl Berrong for spearheading the effort and getting all the nitty gritty details put together, plus the advertising on Channel 11, which takes a special gift. We are so fortunate to have Nelda's unremitting efforts towards keeping us all informed with the monthly Newsletter as well as the First Friday reminders. Thank you Nelda. And thanks too to Olga Hesketh, our efficient and organized book-keeper, who kept track of the People's Choice ballots as well as all the other things she keeps track of (with Nelda), the membership list payments, workshop enrollments, etc. - and put Christine Fortner's workshop, May 7-11, on your calendar, while I am mentioning it.
If you haven't been over to Well Street Art Gallery yet, make a point of doing so. We are very grateful that David Mollett invited the Fairbanks Watercolor Society again this year, and we feel confident that the show is worth a visit - remind your friends that you have artwork there, and that the gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays. Noon to 6pm.  Perhaps they will take a checkbook with them. And
thank you, David for hosting us. The reception area was crowded and the ballot box was stuffed - congratulations to Cheryl Berrong’s “After the Rain” for getting the most People’s Choice votes, followed by Vladimir Zhikhartsev’s “Light in the Woods” with 2nd Place, and then Tom Nixon’s “Kobuk Sunset” for third highest and Honorable Mention. It shows a dedication to 'keeping the brush on the paper', as Tom used to say. (and still does!)
Our Vice-President, Becky Anderson, has been busy not only with her own artwork and jewelry, but also helping with the Show, planning our programs, and heading the Art League while Nikki was out of town, which meets monthly on the First Tuesday. It is worth attending if you want to get ahead in the business of art. Thank you, Becky.
Happy Springtime painting to all - incidentally, has anyone ever tried to sketch or paint any of the ice sculptures? The new home of Ice Alaska is well worth a visit. The single block sculptures are amongst the spruce trees.

Helen Howard, President

FROM BECKY’S CORNER
Greetings and Salutations, Mighty Artists!
What a great
Annual FWS Art Show we had at Well Street Art Company!  It was a very fun and social night, with a large crowd of art enthusiasts attending.  Thanks to all the artists who contributed their beautiful pieces, and to all who helped with intakes, hanging, ballot counting, providing goodies to eat, and hosting the front table.  What a fun group we are!!  Congratulations to Cheryl Berrong, Vladimir Zhikhartsev and Tom Nixon for the People’s Choice awards.  Congratulations to Kate Wood, whose painting was used as the postcard image to advertise the show, and also to Nelda Nixon for being our newest Channel 11 News superstar and Fairbanks Daily News-Miner interviewee.   Quite an honor to all (round of applause inserted here)
And speaking of what a fun group we are, a large crowd showed up to play and paint at the
February meeting.  It felt great to be in the same room with so many friends as we painted with artist Karen Huehold (via Sue Cole's DVD---thanks, Sue!).  A fun time was had by all!
And now on to the
March meeting program (insert drum roll here).........Tammy Phillips will present on her experience with Agora Gallery in NYC...the before...the during....and the after.  We will hear how the gallery found Tammy, the process involved, how the Artists' Reception went, and more. We will also be painting, so bring your paint boxes and materials!
And last but not least, It's Spring Cleaning Time!!  Here's a heads up for the
April meeting....the meeting place, for April only, will not be in the Blue Room.  We will meet at the Pioneer Museum Lobby AND we will be including a studio sale (i.e. yard/2nd hand sale of studio goodies) as one part of our two part program.  So collect those gently used books, materials, supplies (Nelda-some brushes please) that you haven't been using, and we'll have tables set up for sales.  Don't forget to bring some small bills for change.  Also, bring the big bucks for the giant amount of supplies you will be buying at great prices from other artists. Part two of the program is still a secret, even to me, so if you have anything on your wish list that you'd like to see in a program, contact me at beckalisa@aol.com
rom My Corner of the Studio to Yours,
That's the Scoop!

The February Art Show, "Aurora Magic" was magnificent!  With the subject matter being the auroras, it was a multi-media event featuring our fine watercolor artists, Sue Cole, Donna Lenard and Vladimir Zhikhartsev as well as Claudia Lively (children's book author/book signing and gorgeous stained glass creations), Lara Poirrier (photography) and Neal Brown, professor and knower of all things aurora at Poker Flats (discussion, slide show on auroras).  It was a magical evening with lots of art enthusiasts attending.  A good time was had by all.

NELDA’S NOTE
ANNUAL SHOW:
Well folks, our Annual March “INTERIOR LIGHT” is here!   It was very exciting to see what people came up with.  I want to congratulate all the artists who entered paintings.  I’m so proud of you. -- You all had your paperwork tidy and completed.  It made the intake so much easier and faster.  I loved how you followed directions!                                  As you have heard we had 82 Paintings done by 33 artists.  Of those 82, at last count there have been 10 sold. They are: Grey Day, Nelda Nixon, Creamer’s Field, Tom Nixon, Northern Exposure, Deb Horner, Chena Hot Springs Trail, Deb Horner, After the Rain (1st), Cheryl Berrong, Yikes! Stripes!, Dawn Crass, Poppies – Triplets, Peggy Birkenbuel, Peaceful Night, Sue Cole, Light in the Woods (2nd), Vladimir Zhikhartsev and Winter Solitude, Sherry Fisler.  And, almost like last year, we had 390 people vote for their people’s choice.  It was so gratifying see them just keep coming in the door!!  And again, they complained about how hard it was to choose a favorite.  I think Barb Schuhmann ‘s only entry “Sunrise Across the Parking Lot” deserves some attention.  It was the painting the News-Miner chose to put in the paper with our little news article in Latitude on March 2nd.  You can probably still look it up on line if you’d like.  Just www.newsminer.com and then go to Latitude for March 2nd.
DUES for 2012 were due on January 1st.  They can be paid any time now.  Please fill out the lime green sheet that will be at the meeting or print one out from our web site www.fairbankswatercolor.org.  I will have an updated roster with me if you wonder what years you might owe for. It is just $15. per year.  Or if you want to drop, please email me and let me know.  Becky and I will be contacting some folks in the next few months.  Nelda  tnnixon@alaska.net

ALSO…. Tom and I were notified that 'The Fairbanks Watercolor Society - Tom and Nelda Nixon'  along with E. Maya Salganek of Fairbanks have won for Arts and Leadership in the 2012 Interior Alaska Mayors’ Awards for the Arts.   The awards will be presented in the Theatre at Pioneer Park on March 23rd at 6pm, with a reception following upstairs in the Bear Gallery with cup cakes.  If you plan to come, please RSVP  to 456-6485 x 226 or email her at anna@fairbanksarts.org.   We were totally flabbergasted!, but honored that we were nominated.

FAIRBANKS ART LEAGUE

OUT OF TOWN

Mat-Su College is having their second annual weekend Machetanz Art Festival l on June 2 and registration is available now. Get on their web site and then just write in "Art Festival 2012" and it will open. Click on the classes and a list will show up - drawing, painting - oil- watercolor -silk, printmaking, photography, pottery, beading.  Classes are small 8-15 students depending on the class. All day is generally $50 (9-4)+ some material fees in some instances or half day $25 (some classes are half day). Judi Betts is teaching a class there. I think there is an error in the price on her class so you may want to check - I think it is $100 for the day.  Currently it says $1.00 but I think it is a decimal error - either way a great deal!
So if you want a chance to mingle with some fine artists, get that little beginning of summer shot in the arm, take a glorious drive up to the valley (maybe even extend the trip a little) why not check this opportunity out.
